Penumbra Gallery and Studio is Matthew Turlington’s art gallery and working studio. All the artwork, including matting and framing, is produced by Matthew from start to finish in the studio. All work is of the highest quality and permanence.

Matthew is a North Carolina native who he has lived in all the regions of the state, from the mountains to the sea. After a long journey, he decided to make Western North Carolina his permanent home.

Matthew received an Associate’s degree in commercial photography from James Sprunt Community College near the coast, and a BFA in Fine Art Photography from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. He then went on to Boulder, Colorado where he received an MFA in photography and electronic media from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2002.

After three years in Colorado, he decided to return to Western North Carolina, the area that felt most like home to him. Today you can find him at his permanent location, Penumbra Gallery and Studio on Main Street Sylva.
