What Makes Penumbra Gallery different from other art dealers?

I started Penumbra Gallery unofficially officially in 2015. My son had just been born, I was slaving away in kitchens 80+ hours a week just trying to scrape by. I knew I was missing out on his life, and I knew the only way an unofficially educated guy such as myself could get the life he wanted for himself and his child was to go off on his own.

They say if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life...I'm pretty sure a capitalist said that...but it's true. 

But what makes me happy?

Art! But not regular art. Don't get me wrong, a Chagall is beautiful in ways I can't even describe, but last I checked a Chagall isn't readily available to someone of my socioeconomic standing. I drive a Kia! Besides, I'm not a pretentious bastard. Fine art typically is only accessible to the common man in a stuffy museum. 

Art needs to be accessible by the populous. I turned away from fancy art schools. Their art was amazing, but it didn't speak to me. 

What did call my name was the art being created by the people in the streets. Outsider artists. Lowbrow art. If it was different and made a statement, I loved it.

Here we are in 2026, a lot has changed since those early days. Artists I admired have become my friends. We have formed a community of working class heroes, freaks, geeks, and assorted weirdos. We make art because we love it. Our art is a part of ourselves, a glimpse into our crazy lives. 

Now, truth be told, I'm a terrible visual artist! I've tried! I can barely draw a stick person! But as the great cliche' goes, I may not know art but I know what I like! So what a better way to help the people I love than use the skills I do have to promote and give them a platform?

This is not how I saw the about us section going, I'll write something more professional sounding at one point, but to wrap it up: we are weird, we are here, and supporting our artistic insanity goes a long way to supporting art in your local community.
